comms manager

Communications Manager (Maternity Cover)

Job Purpose: To raise the profile of Wigan Youth Zone amongst key stakeholders in the region, through the development and implementation of a comprehensive communications and marketing strategy. You will be responsible for developing, managing and maintaining all communications and marketing activities within the Youth Zone to enhance visibility, build support and increase our effectiveness.

Head of Fundraising                          

Contract: Full Time
Hours: 37.5 hours per week (including evenings & weekends)
Location:

Salary: Up to £40,000 (Negotiable dependent upon experience)

Job Purpose: To be responsible for devising and delivering a fundraising strategy to meet the income requirements of Wigan Youth Zone and to ensure a high-quality experience for all donors, such as companies (including corporate foundations), individuals and charitable trusts (including family trusts) to the Youth Zone, embedding their support for the long-term. To create and deliver a strategy in collaboration with the Business Development Manager to enhance the experience of all our existing individual and corporate patrons (worth c£450,000), to boost engagement at all levels within these companies and to maximise the likelihood of retained or increased support.

Targeted Youth Worker – Girls Room               

Contract: Part Time
Hours: 12hr post (opportunity for extra hours covering annual leave)
Location:
 Wigan Youth Zone, Parsons Walk, Wigan
Salary: £7.80 – £9.50 per hour

Job Purpose: The job will require you to deliver a range of Targeted projects and activities within our Girls Room. This will be working predominately with Girls but not exclusively. The aim is to create a relaxed environment which engages children and young people in positive activities in a fun and informal way, with a main focus on issue based and targeted work. This includes running issue based programmes and activities and having open discussions with young people around issues that affect them in today’s society; including Sexual Health, Mental Health, Drugs and Alcohol, Health and Well-being etc.

Holiday Club Youth Worker                     

Contract: Part Time (seasonal)
Hours: Shifts are flexible and hours range between 7.30am & 6pm Monday to Friday.

We are looking for Holiday Club youth workers to join our Team here at Wigan Youth Zone!

Are you passionate about young people? Are you fun, outgoing and enjoy working in a fast paced environment? Are you able to inspire and be inspired by young people? Can you be creative and think on your feet? Have you got the flexibility to work over the holiday period?

If you answered yes to these questions, then we want YOU to come and work for us, supporting young people aged 8-12 years throughout the school holidays.

‘Access All Areas’ Volunteer

Wigan Youth Zone is proud to be inclusive of all abilities. We regularly have young people with various additional needs attend the facility and our ‘Access All Areas’ team are there to help all young people reach their full potential.

Our motto is to ‘Invest, Inspire and Include’ all young people and as a volunteer you will help us to achieve this. Whether it is working one to one with a young person or delivering an inclusive cooking session, you will help all young people develop the social and life skills they need to be an independent and confident person.

Art Zone Volunteer

Our Art Zone is a place where young people can get creative and use their imagination. Art is a way in which young people can express themselves individually and build self-confidence. Varying activities such as drawing and painting, animation, photography and textiles, the sky is the limit for our creative young people.

As an Art Zone volunteer you will part of an extremely creative team who ensure that there is always something fun for the young people to be involved with. It will be colourful, you may get messy but most of all you will have fun in everything you do.

Skills Required:

Enterprise and Employability Volunteer

Our enterprise and employability team offer support to young people who want to learn about business and improve their employability skills.

As a volunteer you will be involved in exciting projects such as ‘Cookie Mad’ and ‘Like Clockwork’ which are two successful businesses that have been developed and are ran by young people, both of which have won awards nationally and internationally.

As part of the employability team you can help young people gain confidence, work experience and the skills required to confidently go out and find work. Our ‘Get the Tools, Get a Job’ employability course is our way to support young people in getting their foot on the career ladder.

‘Rec Area’ Volunteer

The hub of the Youth Zone, every young person who visits will join in the range of activities in the rec. It is a bustling area, with many activities running at once. Whether it’s a game of pool, a mini challenge or a big sporting event on the big screen, the rec is where the young people can relax with their friends.

As a rec volunteer you be involved in pool competitions, table tennis challenges, board games, card games and just generally having a chat and spending time with the young people.

The rec is where some of the simplest youth work takes place, building positive relationships, encouraging confidence and instilling a fun factor in young people.

Skills Required:

  • Be able to work in an ever changing environment
  • Creative and fun in the activities you are involved with and/or plan

  • A willingness to join in with the activities

Football Volunteer

Our football programme is jam packed with leagues, competitions, challenges and of course our Wigan Youth Zone teams who compete in local leagues.

As a football volunteer you will be involved in the organising of tournaments, coaching the young people (boys and girls) and refereeing our mini leagues. Football is a hugely popular sport at Wigan Youth Zone and we encourage everyone to get involved, no matter what their ability.

Whether you simply love the beautiful game or aspire to become a football coach we have plenty of opportunities for you to get involved.

Skills Required:

  • A passion for football
  • A FA coaching qualification is desirable but if you know the rules and can show off some skills, great!
  • Friendly and approachable
  • A willingness to join in with the activities
  • Ability to referee friendly matches
  • Strong group management (you will always be supported though)

Girls in Action Volunteer

At Wigan Youth Zone we work hard to increase the number of young women and girls who actively take part in sport and physical activity. We want to make sport open to all young women by removing the barriers that may stop them participating.

As a volunteer you will be involved in a wide range of sports and physical activity session that specifically target young women and girls, such as gym sessions, football, netball, boxing, climbing and badminton. You will be involved in the planning and development of sessions and incentives to encourage participation.

  • A keen interest in sport and physical activity

Girls Room Volunteer

The girl’s room works to promote female participation across the Youth Zone. It also provides a place where the girls who attend can relax, be pampered and discuss the issues which are important to them.

As a girl’s room volunteer you can get involved in a variety of projects such as the hair and beauty salon, question box, hot topics and issue-based sessions such as sexual health and drugs and alcohol awareness.

We aim to promote positive body image, confidence and self-esteem in the young people who attend the girl’s room, so you will become a strong role model for many of the young people.

Market Stall Volunteer

Wigan Youth Zone market stall is based in Wigan Market and aims to raise money to fund projects for the young people who attend. The stall is linked in with the enterprise projects within the youth zone meaning that the stall is also manned by some of the young people as well.

As a volunteer on the market stall you will be working with the general public, selling products, maintaining stock levels and ensuring the stall is attractive to buyers. You will also be involved with the promotion of Wigan Youth Zone, keeping the public up to date about what events are coming up as well as the exciting activities the money raised is allowing the young people to be involved with.

Music and Media Volunteer

Our music and media area is extremely popular. Boasting its own recording studio and a wide range of instruments for the young people to learn, it is a place that encourages masses of creativity.

As a volunteer you will be able to teach instruments, run karaoke, work in the recording studio, and be part of the sound production team supporting the set up and running of a wide variety of events.

For those who have an interest in film the media section gives opportunities to help run our YouTube channel, create music videos and also run our internal radio station.

Skills Required:

  • Ability to play an instrument (including sing) is desirable
  • Passion for music
  • Creative and fun in the activities you are involved with and/or plan
  • Friendly and approachable
  • A willingness to join in with the activities

  • Knowledge of programmes such as Cubase
  • Video editing skills
  • Radio station experience

Outdoor Adventure Volunteer

Wigan Youth Zone has an ever growing outdoor adventure department offering a wide range of opportunities for young people to challenge themselves to do something new. The outdoor adventure team deliver the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards as well as general activities such as climbing, canoeing, trekking and mountain biking.

As a volunteer you will be involved in a varied programme, including helping to run the climbing wall, archery sessions and supporting the young people through their Duke of Edinburgh Award.

  • A love of the outdoors (you may get wet, you could get very wet!)

Performing Arts Volunteer

Performing Arts is a great way for young people to develop their confidence and team work skills. Offering as sessions such as cheerleading, dance, drama and free running there is plenty to get involved with.

As a volunteer you will be able to get involved in a wide range of creative and fun sessions, support events such as the annual productions and fundraising performances.

Whether you love to be on stage performing or dancing or see yourself as a scriptwriter or choreographer, there will be plenty to get involved with.

Playwork Volunteer

Our junior club is a busy, vibrant and fun environment where children can let their imagination run wild through activities and play. With activities such as dodgeball, gardening, cheerleading, gymnastics and ‘Rock School’ our junior club ensures there is something for everyone.

As a play work volunteer you will understand the importance of play in the development of young people. You will be involved in a wide range of activities from playing traditional board games to water fights. You will be a role model to the young people who attend, whilst at the same time the first one on the dance floor for musical statues. It will be fun, it will be noisy and it will be worth it!

As a play worker volunteer you can work on our junior club and on our holiday clubs.

Reception and Admin Volunteer

With over 200 young people attending Wigan Youth Zone every night our reception is a very busy place to be.  Different to other receptions you will mainly be working face to face with young people but the same organisation and communication skills apply.

As part of the administration duties, as a volunteer you will be involved with bookings for holiday clubs, new memberships, dealing with enquiries and day to day admin that different areas of the youth zone require.

Sports Volunteer

Our sports team have three main principles to encourage participation in sport and physical activity:

Try – These sessions are recreational and all about the young people ‘having a go’ at a new sport or physical activity.

Train – Train allows young people to perfect their skills in a particular sport. Whether it’s natural talent or being keen to learn, the young people can attend structured coaching sessions.

Team – If a young person would like to compete in a chosen sport they can join a Wigan Youth Zone sports team.

As a sport’s volunteer you will be an integral part of delivering these principles. Our volunteers have a wide range of sporting interests and gain hands on experience in coaching sport and delivering recreational sport.

Sports we deliver include: basketball; dodgeball; badminton; tennis; lacrosse; volleyball; futsal; hockey and many more.
