Last month, some of our Senior and Junior members were presented with an amazing opportunity to work alongside the very talented Jessica Riley from Oh So Specials.
Jessica specialises in hand lettering; creating beautiful artworks, signs, window displays, and more. She has completed projects up and down the UK, as well as in Australia where she used to live for several years, before returning back to England and settling in West Lancashire.
Our members were asked to help with a permanent mural, which was to be displayed at Wigan North Western train station. Our young people spent time developing and generating a whole host of brilliant ideas which were then chosen from. The winning designs were to be used in the final installation.
The mural depicts a range of “Wiganese” words and phrases, in order to give the station a more local feeling. They can also be used to educate tourists and people traveling through the station on the rich language of our town. It is a great way to brighten up our train station and bring happiness to the hundreds of people who will see the piece each day.
Jess has enjoyed working with our members that she has decided to become a volunteer at Wigan Youth Zone.

“Thank you so much! Was so brilliant seeing you all there last night to celebrate such a fun and meaningful project.”
Wigan Youth Zone would like to say a HUGE thank you to Jessica for allowing our young people to be a part of such an amazing public project, and for providing them with a rare opportunity that they will remember and treasure for a lifetime. Our members have gained invaluable skills from working alongside you, which they will carry with them into their future careers.
