This month, Wigan Youth Zone witnessed an unbelievable act of kindness from a member of the public.
Labour MP for Wigan and Shadow Foreign Secretary, Lisa Nandy, recently mentioned her mentorship with one of Wigan Youth Zone’s members, Hannah. She spoke about Hannah and her passion to study medicine on the radio, which was broadcast up and down the country to thousands of listeners. The conversation also passionately discussed the difficulties young people currently face due to the pandemic, such as online learning, shortage of laptops, and having no internet access.
One of those listeners, Uma McKevitt, reached out and told us about how she was so moved by Hannah’s story and wanted to help in any way she could so that Hannah could pursue a career in medicine. Uma decided that she would buy Hannah a laptop in order to help her to succeed and unlock her potential.
Uma McKevitt said:
“I’ve no connection with Lisa Nandy – I simply heard her speak about Hannah’s plight on the radio and wanted to help. I grew up in Northern Ireland in the 1970s/1980s when unemployment was high (and there was a fair bit of discrimination as well) and consequently if you were any way academic, you were encouraged to get as much education as you could – as that was likely to be the only way to succeed. Thankfully there are many ways to succeed now and academia is definitely not the only way; but if that is what Hannah wants to use as her route to a better life, well good on her.”
Hannah Ameen, our senior member, said:
“I’m so grateful to both my sponsors for such a wonderful gift, Lisa Nandy who has helped through so much in my medical path so far, and youth voice/youth zone for giving me endless opportunities to explore and expand my skills and allowing me to establish relationships and connections with people from all over the UK. I couldn’t have done it without you all.”
Wigan Youth Zone is blown away by the generosity and kindness that members of the public display for us and relies on donations and support from business investments along with kind donations from the local community. Every donation goes towards helping the young people of Wigan and Leigh to discover a world of possibilities and create the future they deserve.
