From the 15th – 19th November, it was Anti-Bullying Week in the UK. This week is used in order to educate people on the effects of bullying and to try and prevent bullying from occurring.
Bullying can happen anywhere, including in-person and online, and can include physical, verbal, and emotional abuse that can be detrimental to people’s lives. This is why it is so important to show the consequences of bullying as it allows people a chance to reflect on their past actions and reevaluate future decisions.
At Wigan Youth Zone, we used themed activities in our sessions this week to teach about bullying and the devastating effects it can have.
In art, we have been making anti-bullying themed posters and artwork to put on display in the youth zone. These posters talked about body positivity and feeling good in your own skin and also had factual information about bullying.
In music, our members have been creating an anti-bullying playlist, filled with songs that help them to feel good and celebrate being themselves. They have also been taking part in our confidence karaoke sessions which aim to provide an inclusive and supportive environment for anyone who wants to sing.
Our sports department had an anti-bullying-themed zoom meeting with Wigan MP and Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, Lisa Nandy!
Our youth zone has zero-tolerance for bullying and we promise to deal with any and all situations that are brought to our attention in a swift and professional manner. Our youth zone is focused on inclusivity and maintaining a supportive and positive environment for all young people in the Wigan and Leigh borough. We aim to ensure that all of our members feel welcomed and safe when attending one of our sessions and promise to be a listening ear for anyone who needs it.
If you are a victim or witness of bullying we have a dedicated team of staff who are here to support you. Our wellbeing workers, Hannah, Rachel, and Charlotte work to build meaningful relationships with our members in order to help them to gain confidence and discuss any issues they may have.
Although the anti-bullying week has come to an end, our anti-bullying efforts will continue year-round and will remain embedded into our core offer, always.
