Team Wigan Youth Zone Comes Together for an Inspiring Training and Development Day
At Wigan Youth Zone, investing in our people is just as important as investing in our young people. For that reason, our first full team training day of 2026 was a powerful moment for reflection, learning, and growth.
The day brought together staff, volunteers, and Youth Workers from Wigan Youth Zone and Horizon Youth Zone. Together, we created space to learn, reflect, and strengthen how we work collaboratively. Ultimately, this shared time helped reinforce our commitment to supporting young people across Wigan.
Organisational Updates: Determination at the Heart of Our Work
We began the day with organisational updates from across the youth zone charity. Firstly, the People Team shared progress on improving internal communication. They also officially introduced the new People Hub, which will better support staff and volunteers.
Next, Anthony, CEO of Wigan Youth Zone, provided an honest overview of organisational performance and future strategy. He spoke openly about both successes and challenges. Importantly, he highlighted the need for resilience across Youth Zones within the OnSide network.
Following this, Lynsey, Head of Fundraising, shared an update on fundraising activity. She explained why fundraising and patron support are vital to the sustainability of the charity. As a result, the team was reminded how community support enables us to continue delivering essential youth services in Wigan.
Across all updates, one theme stood out: determination. Determination to adapt. Determination to overcome challenges. And determination to continue making a positive difference for young people.
Essential Training to Support Young People Safely and Professionally
The full team then took part in essential training sessions. These sessions focused on boundaries when working with young people, youth work ethics, and wanding and safety procedures.
Together, these sessions reinforced the importance of professionalism and safeguarding. They also refreshed core skills needed in youth work. As a result, the team strengthened their confidence when creating safe, supportive, and empowering environments for young people at our youth zone.
Team Building with KABs: Collaboration in Action
After lunch, the afternoon focused on team building with the fantastic KABs. For 3.5 hours, staff and volunteers took part in energetic and engaging activities. These challenges tested physical ability, problem-solving, and logical thinking. Most importantly, they encouraged teamwork.
Teams worked together on activities such as building the tallest tower using only sticks. Meanwhile, the fast-paced pipeline challenge tested coordination and communication. Throughout the afternoon, trust and collaboration were key to success.
One particularly meaningful moment came during the Superhero inspiration activity. During this session, colleagues shared compliments and affirmations with one another. As a result, it highlighted the strengths, care, and dedication across Team Wigan Youth Zone.
A Day of Collaboration, Reflection, and Growth
Overall, the day was a celebration of collaboration, learning, and shared purpose. It brought together staff, volunteers, Youth Workers, and behind-the-scenes teams. Together, everyone was united by a commitment to young people across Wigan.
Kate the Volunteer and Training Coordinator shared her reflections on the day:
“Our first team training day of 2026 was a day to remember, and it was fantastic to witness the energy and engagement everyone brought to the workshops and team-building activities. Watching Team WYZ collaborate, challenge themselves, and have a willingness to learn and reflect was a powerful reminder of why investing in development matters. When we create space and time to learn together, we’re not just building skills; we’re strengthening our culture, our confidence, and professionalism when working with and for young people.”
