A Catch Up With Nikki
There’s something special about walking through the doors of a youth club, something you don’t fully appreciate until you’ve been away for a while.
As Head of Youth Work here at Wigan Youth Zone, I’ve had the privilege of seeing thousands of young people come through our doors over the years. Some arrive full of confidence, ready to dive straight into everything on offer. Others come in a little quieter, unsure of what to expect.
But what they all tend to find, pretty quickly, is a place where they can truly be themselves. A place where they feel they belong.
What Makes WYZ So Special?
To our current members: you are what makes WYZ what it is.
The energy. The laughter. The random conversations. The chaos (you know who you are 😂). The willingness to get involved. That’s what transforms the Youth Zone from just a building into a real community.
And to those who haven’t been in a while… we’ve missed you.
It’s Okay to Take a Break, But You Can Always Come Back
We get it… life gets busy.
Routines change. People drift off. And then there are exams… (yikes 😅).
But here’s the important thing: our doors have always stayed open for you.
Whether it’s been a few weeks, a few months, or even longer, you are always welcome back. And right now, there’s more happening than ever.
What’s New at Wigan Youth Zone?!
We’ve been listening closely to our young people — through youth inspectors and our Youth Voice team — and making changes based on what you want.
Here are just some of the exciting things happening right now:
- Relaunch of our youth-led radio station
- Podcasting and media production sessions
- Trampolining activities
- The return of STEP UP
STEP UP is Back!
Our popular transition session for Years 6, 7 and 8 is returning:
🗓️ Every Monday, 4–7pm
📅 Starting 1st June
It’s a great opportunity to:
- Try out senior club sessions
- Meet new people
- Build confidence ahead of high school
- Connect with others heading to the same school
Improving Your Space
We’re also continuing to invest in the building and facilities based on your feedback.
This year includes:
- Upgrades to the climbing wall
- Improvements to outdoor pitches
- Refurbished downstairs toilets (now individual cubicles)
- New equipment for the skate park and STEM activities
We want WYZ to feel like your space, because it is.
It's More Than Just Activities
Sometimes, the best part of Youth Zone isn’t the activities at all.
It’s simply having somewhere to go.
A place to:
- Chill after school
- Spend time with friends
- Meet new people
- Take a break from screens (or at least try to 😅)
- Talk to trusted adults who genuinely care
That sense of support, safety, and belonging is what we’re all about.
A Message to Parents & Carers
We understand how important it is to know your young person is in a safe, supportive, and positive environment.
At WYZ, we work hard every day to ensure every young person feels:
- Heard
- Respected
- Encouraged
- Valued
If you have any questions about our sessions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Come and:
- See what’s new
- Reconnect with familiar faces
- Try something different
- Or just pop in for a chat — no big reason needed
Because this is your space.
It always has been.
