Wigan Charity Boosts Opportunities for Young People
Wigan Youth Zone helping young people in Wigan and Leigh explore hobbies, try new experiences, and gain confidence.
Recently, we received a grant from the Million Hours Fund, supported by the Government and The National Lottery Community Fund
Some activities are brand-new, like multi-media, podcasting, animation, film and STEM activities. Others, such as climbing walls, football and arts and crafts, are familiar but now reach more young people. This combination gives members more ways to try things they enjoy.
The Million Hours Fund is a £19 million jointly funded initiative from the Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) and The National Lottery Community Fund, the largest community funder in the UK. The programme funds organisations to provide positive activities for young people in areas with high levels of antisocial behaviour. Find out more about the fund on The National Lottery Community Fund website.
Activities That Inspire and Engage
The funded activities mix new experiences with some existing sessions. This is just part of our full programme:
- Music and Media: Multi-media sessions including radio, podcasting, animation, and film.
- Arts and Crafts: Creative sessions to experiment and express themselves.
- Sports and Physical Activity: Climbing wall sessions, football, and girls-only gym sessions.
- STEM Makerspace: Hands-on projects that spark curiosity and problem-solving.
- Cooking and Baking: Tasty, fun and practical.
- Youth Voice Sessions: Opportunities for young people to help shape what we do.
- Outreach in Leigh: Street-based activities delivered in partnership with Wigan Council
Head of Arts, Zha Olurankinse, told us:
“This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to gain skills in highly sought-after creative and digital areas. Young people have been asking for more opportunities in music, media and technology, and this funding allows us to respond directly to that demand.”
Oliver, a young person also shared his enthusiasm for the new offer, explaining that he was excited to see opportunities in podcasting, music and digital media becoming more readily available within the Youth Zone’s programme: “I’m really excited about the new funding because I’ve always wanted to learn better editing skills and how to film long-form videos that interest other people as well as me.”
