Supporting Next Generation Careers
Supporting next generation careers is an important part of what we do at Wigan Youth Zone. Every year, we help young people across Wigan and Leigh take real steps towards jobs, education, and apprenticeships.
In 2025, our employability programmes supported hundreds of young people aged 16 to 24. These programmes included Life Skills, Summer Jobs and Life Skills+ in Wigan, and Pathway to Employment and Hatch in Leigh.
The results speak for themselves.
Real impact across Wigan and Leigh
In 2025, we:
- Supported 802 young people with employability and job brokerage
- Helped 146 young people move into employment or an apprenticeship
- Supported 118 young people into further education or training
- Enabled 105 young people to take part in volunteering or work experience
These outcomes show why supporting next generation careers matters. Young people need guidance, experience, and confidence to take their next step.
Michaela’s journey into digital marketing
Michaela joined our Pathway to Employment programme in January 2025. She wanted to work in marketing but felt unsure where to start.
She lacked experience and confidence. Michaela had applied for roles but received no replies. This knocked her confidence and led her to seek support through the Job Centre.
That is where we stepped in.
How we supported Michaela
Over eight months, we worked closely with Michaela through one-to-one sessions. We helped her build confidence and understand her options.
She took part in:
- Mock interviews
- CV development for marketing and general roles
- Sessions exploring university courses and creative career pathways
- Conversations about volunteering and work experience opportunities
We then introduced Michaela to Vanliners, one of our patrons. They agreed to offer her work experience with their marketing team. She worked with them on set days until Christmas.
She also visited Evolve to learn about international business and the role marketing plays in global organisations.
Turning experience into an apprenticeship
Michaela completed her work experience with Vanliners’ marketing team and quickly made an impression. She used her photography skills and designed vehicle wraps. Michaela brought fresh ideas and showed real commitment.
By the end of her placement, Vanliners offered her a Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship in Digital Marketing at Manchester Metropolitan University. They also offered her a five-year contract with the marketing team.
Michaela will complete her degree by 2030 while gaining hands-on experience in a professional setting. That is supporting next generation careers in action.
Michaela’s words
Michaela told us about her experience: “I often think back to the many moments I spent in your office at Wigan Youth Zone feeling overwhelmed and frustrated with myself not knowing what I wanted to do and just deciding to take a leap at something I’ve always learnt towards: marketing.”
“I loved doing my placement at Vanliners and I’ve proved to myself, my colleagues and management that I can learn and do whatever I need to and have shown a keen interest in everything I have learnt.” “I asked about apprenticeships but they didn’t offer them in marketing however over the last couple of months they looked into giving me an apprenticeship and offered A Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship in Digital Marketing at Manchester Metropolitan University to me! I was so happy it made me quite emotional just how I have done it all myself by working hard and being resilient. And as a result of that I’ve created such an amazing opportunity for myself!"
Vanliners on Michaela’s impact
Charlotte Unsworth, HR and Quality Systems Manager at Vanliners, said: "Michaela very quickly showed real potential. She was keen to learn, took feedback on board, and brought new ideas to the business. It became clear early on that she had genuine talent, which is why we were delighted to offer her an apprenticeship which started in January 2026. Since starting with us, she has continued to do well, growing in confidence and skill, and making a positive contribution to the team."
Why supporting next generation careers matters
Young people across Wigan and Leigh face barriers to employment. Many lack experience, confidence, or knowledge of their options. Our programmes break down these barriers.
We connect young people with employers. We build their skills. We help them believe in themselves.
Supporting next generation careers creates long-term change for individuals, businesses, and communities.
Want to get involved?
If you want to support young people and help shape their futures, we would love to hear from you. Businesses can offer placements, mentoring, volunteering opportunities, or apprenticeships.
