Be there for young people in care
At Wigan Youth Zone, we believe every young person deserves someone they can rely on. That’s why we’re calling on our local community to step up and support young people in care by becoming Independent Visitors.
It’s simple. It’s impactful. And right now, it’s urgently needed.
Only 3.3% Have One – Let’s Change That
Did you know that 100% of young people in care have the right to an Independent Visitor, but only 3.3% actually have one?
An Independent Visitor is a consistent, trustworthy adult who volunteers to spend time with a young person in care. They’re not part of the system. They’re not paid. And that’s what makes their presence so powerful.
These visits might involve something as simple as a walk in the park, a game of bowling, a trip to the cinema or pottery painting. It’s not about the activity – it’s about the connection.
One care leaver told us:
“When there’s no-one to talk to, even about little things like tearing your coat, you feel angry. Tiny things can become big things because there’s no-one to talk them over with.”
This is exactly why we’re asking more people across Wigan and Leigh to support young people in care and be part of this life-changing programme.

What It Means to Be an Independent Visitor
You don’t need to be an expert. You don’t need loads of time. You just need 2–3 hours every couple of weeks and a willingness to show up.
We’ll take care of the training – we just need you to bring the heart. Independent Visitors tell us that the relationships they build are among the most rewarding parts of their lives. For the young people involved, that consistent, caring presence can make all the difference.
This is your chance to be that person for someone who really needs it.
We’ll Support You Every Step of the Way
When you become an Independent Visitor through Wigan Youth Zone, you’re not doing it alone. We provide full training and ongoing support, so you’ll always have someone to talk to and somewhere to turn.
We believe that if more people take this step, together we can truly support young people in care, not just in principle, but in action.

“Independent Visitors play a unique and powerful role in the lives of young people in care. You don’t need special qualifications - just patience, empathy, and a willingness to show up. For the young people involved, knowing someone is there just for them can have a lasting impact.”
