Wigan Youth Zone partnership improves support for young hospital patients in Wigan
A new and innovative partnership between Wigan Youth Zone and the WWL Trust is set to transform the way young patients are supported across hospital services in the borough. The initiative introduces a dedicated Children’s and Young People’s Participation Lead, working directly within healthcare settings to strengthen youth voice, improve wellbeing, and build stronger links between hospital care and community support.
This collaboration marks a significant step forward in integrating youth work within clinical environments, ensuring that children and young people are not only treated medically, but also supported emotionally and socially throughout their healthcare journey.
What is the Wigan Youth Zone?
Wigan Youth Zone is a leading youth charity based in Wigan, dedicated to empowering young people through safe spaces, positive relationships, and life-changing opportunities. The organisation provides access to sports, creative activities, mentoring, and targeted support designed to help young people build confidence, resilience, and skills for the future.
A New Role Focused on Youth Voice in Healthcare
At the heart of this partnership is a newly introduced, non-clinical Children’s and Young People’s Participation Lead. The role is designed to:
- Strengthen engagement with young patients
- Amplify youth voice across hospital services
- Improve emotional wellbeing during hospital stays
- Support smoother transitions back into the community after discharge
The role will be based across key areas including Rainbow Ward at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, the Children’s Accident and Emergency Department, outpatient clinics, and community services.
By working across multiple departments, the initiative ensures consistent support for young people throughout their care experience.
Supporting Young People Beyond Hospital Walls
A key focus of the partnership is building stronger connections between hospital care and community-based opportunities.
By working closely with Wigan Youth Zone, young patients will be supported to access safe, positive environments once they leave hospital. This helps reduce isolation, build confidence, and ensure ongoing emotional and social support during recovery.
The initiative also aims to:
- Improve communication between young patients and healthcare staff
- Reduce anxiety linked to hospital experiences
- Provide age-appropriate engagement and advocacy
- Signpost young people to wider community services
A 12-Month Pilot to Improve Youth Healthcare Experience
This 12-month pilot programme has been designed to improve the experience of young people aged 8–19 years across WWL services. It places young voices at the centre of service development and ensures that their feedback directly informs how care is delivered.
By embedding youth participation into healthcare settings, the project aims to create a more holistic approach to care that supports both physical and mental wellbeing.
Get Involved: Hospital Youth Voice
