How Wigan Youth Zone Helped Transform Confidence, Wellbeing & Future Aspirations
Before joining Wigan Youth Zone (WYZ), Katie was going through a difficult period. She had become withdrawn, was spending time with negative influences, and often found herself caught up in anti-social behaviour around Wigan Park. Living with Autism — and later receiving an ADHD diagnosis — meant she struggled to channel her energy in positive ways. She frequently felt overwhelmed, misunderstood, and isolated.
This took a toll on her everyday wellbeing. Katie’s school attendance dropped, her sleep was disrupted, and she developed unhealthy coping strategies such as vaping. Instead of expressing her feelings, she bottled them up.
Finding Belonging Again at Wigan Youth Zone
Katie returned to WYZ with a few friends after being away for some time. Unsure of what to expect, she headed for two places she loved most: the football pitches and the music room.
These familiar passions helped her reconnect almost immediately. Staff and members welcomed her warmly, recognised her talent, and encouraged her to get involved. That first visit was a turning point — Katie felt seen, valued, and supported for the first time in a long while.
From then on, she began attending WYZ almost every day.
Positive Activities That Built Confidence and Purpose
WYZ provided a safe space where Katie could channel her energy into positive activities including:
- Football
- Music and singing
- Boxing
- MMA
With consistency and encouragement, her confidence grew. She later became a Young Leader, a role she is proud to take on and one she truly thrives in.
Incredible Opportunities & Unforgettable Experiences
Katie’s commitment opened doors she never imagined possible. After winning a Wigan Youth Zone singing competition, she travelled to London to record in a professional studio — a huge confidence boost that validated her passion for music.
She has since performed at several major WYZ events, including the prestigious WYZ Patrons’ Dinner, showcasing her talent to wider audiences.
Katie also plays for the WYZ girls’ football team and took part in a Snowdonia residential, which helped her build resilience, independence, and trust in others.
Her hard work and transformation were recognised when she won Senior Member of the Year at the Young People’s Awards — a powerful milestone in her journey.
Most recently, Katie joined Youth Voice, contributing her ideas and helping shape the future of Wigan Youth Zone for young people like herself.
Wellbeing Support That Made a Lasting Difference
Alongside group activities, Katie began attending 1:1 wellbeing sessions. Thanks to the trusting relationships she built — especially through boxing and MMA — she slowly opened up about challenges she had held inside for years:
- Her difficult upbringing
- Mental health struggles
- Anxiety around school
- A heart condition
- An ongoing ankle injury
Talking about these issues was a huge step for someone who had always kept her emotions in.
With guidance and support, Katie developed a deeper understanding of her feelings and learned healthier ways to cope. She became more comfortable speaking to staff and even her teachers. This shift led to a significant improvement in school attendance, and she successfully completed her mock exams — proving to herself that she is more capable and resilient than she once believed.
She has continued with her GCSEs in Music and Drama after previously considering dropping them due to anxiety.
Katie has also worked hard to improve her sleep routine, reduce her vaping, and look after her physical and mental health despite ongoing challenges.
Katie in Her Own Words
“Without WYZ I would not have the opportunity to do half of the things I’ve done. It has changed my life for the better. I’m back playing football, I’ve started singing, and I’ve made friends for life.”
On how boxing has helped her:
“I’ve learned to be more open and actually talk about how I’m feeling. I feel happier, my attendance has improved, I cope better in lessons, and I’m more confident.”
A Bright Future Ahead
Today, Katie is happier, more confident, and more hopeful about her future. She has replaced isolation with positive relationships, leadership roles, and meaningful opportunities.
Wigan Youth Zone has given her a place where she belongs — where she is understood, empowered, and able to believe in herself.
And if Katie continues on this incredible path, her potential will only keep growing.
