Wigan Youth Zone Young Leaders Honoured at Greater Manchester High Sheriff Awards
Two inspiring young volunteers from the partnership between Wigan Youth Zone and Leigh Youth Hub have been recognised at the 2026 Greater Manchester High Sheriff Awards for their exceptional contribution to youth leadership and community action.
On 6 March, High Sheriff of Greater Manchester Martin Ainscough celebrated individuals across the region who go above and beyond for their communities. Among them were Maja Cichonska and Elena Waywell, two remarkable young leaders whose dedication, passion, and commitment have made a lasting impact on local young people.
Strengthening Youth Work Across Wigan & Leigh: A Proud Partnership
Wigan Youth Zone and Leigh Youth Hub share a strong and growing partnership designed to expand youth provision across the Wigan and Leigh borough.
Through this collaboration:
- Wigan Youth Zone staff deliver a full session every Monday at Leigh Youth Hub
- Youth Workers also support the Thursday sessions, helping to run activities, build relationships, and offer specialised youth work support
- The partnership enables more young people in the Wigan and Leigh area to access high‑quality, consistent youth work, regardless of which part of the borough they live in
Maja and Elena volunteer as part of the Wigan Youth Zone Takeover Sessions delivered weekly at Leigh Youth Hub. These sessions give young people real responsibility helping to lead activities, support junior members, develop confidence, and play an active part in their youth community.
The impact so far (since June 2023):
- 1,179 young people have become members
- 13,992 attendances have been recorded across sessions
These numbers highlight the incredible reach and value of the partnership, ensuring more young people benefit from safe spaces, trusted relationships, and positive opportunities.
The achievements of Maja and Elena perfectly showcase the opportunities this partnership creates, giving young people the chance to volunteer, lead, and grow.
Celebrating Youth Leadership Through the Takeover Sessions
Maja and Elena volunteer as part of the Wigan Youth Zone Takeover Sessions delivered weekly at Leigh Youth Hub. These sessions give young people the opportunity to step into real leadership roles, supporting junior members, helping staff run activities, and developing key youth work skills.
Their enthusiasm, dedication, and kindness have made both girls outstanding role models and valued members of the joint youth team.
Their commitment was recognised with the Special Recognition Award for Voluntary Services to Youth Leadership, presented by the High Sheriff.
Wigan Youth Zone and Leigh Youth Hub also received a £500 donation to support further youth provision.
Maja’s Snow Camp Success: A Marathon Effort
Alongside her volunteer role, Maja has excelled in the national Snow Camp programme. Despite being younger than the typical entry age, she has been selected for Stage 3: Excel, taking place in Andorra this April.
To raise the £750 needed for her place, Maja undertook a challenge of incredible determination:
She ran a full marathon:
- from Leigh Youth Hub
- to the Snow Centre in Manchester
- and finally to Wigan Youth Zone
All in just under four hours.
Her resilience and commitment have made her one of the programme’s standout young people.
“We are incredibly proud of Maja and Elena. Their passion for helping others and their willingness to lead by example shines through in everything they do. Watching them grow through the Wigan Youth Zone Mixed Up Mondays Sessions has been inspiring, they consistently bring energy, kindness, and commitment to every session. Their recognition at the High Sheriff’s Awards is truly deserved, and I’m honoured to have nominated them.”
Hannah Osmond, Community Youth Work Lead at Wigan Youth Zone
“Both Maja and Elena truly deserve this recognition. Supporting Maja through her Snow Camps journey has been inspiring; her selection for Stage 3 despite being younger than the usual age shows her determination and drive. Running a full marathon to fund her place, from Leigh Youth Hub to the Snow Centre and then to Wigan Youth Zone, in under four hours was an extraordinary achievement. Both girls are exceptional role models, and it’s a privilege to be part of their journeys.”
Hannah Jenkins‑Purdham, Youth & Community Worker at Leigh Youth Hub
“Leigh Youth Hub has allowed me to grow as a person. I've been so fortunate to receive the support I have from the staff at the hub who have helped me start my voluntary work, Snow Camps, and running my marathon. Without Leigh Youth Hub and Wigan Youth Zone, I would not have been able to receive this award.”
