Double the Team, Double the Impact
Over the last few months -especially since Gemma joined the fundraising team at Wigan Youth Zone – I’ve been learning the art of delegation… or, as I like to call it, letting go.
I’ll be honest – it hasn’t come naturally.
I genuinely love my job. Seeing first-hand the difference we make as a youth charity in Wigan and Leigh is something I never take for granted. It’s what motivates me every day. But I’ve realised that loving what you do doesn’t mean you have to do all of it.
Sometimes, the most impactful thing you can do is step back and trust your team.
Growing Our Fundraising Team in Wigan
Since joining in January, Gemma has made an incredible impact. She’s been out across Wigan and Leigh, building relationships with local businesses, meeting supporters, and becoming a familiar face in the community.
She’s also taken on a busy calendar of charity events—and even led much of the planning for our annual ball. Anyone involved in fundraising events knows that’s no small task.
Watching her grow in confidence has been brilliant. She’s truly taken to fundraising like a duck to water.
What Delegation Has Taught Me
Here’s what I’ve learned along the way:
- Two fundraisers are better than one
- Trust your instincts—and learn to let go
- Support your team and celebrate their success
These lessons remind me of my Diploma in Fundraising, where we talked about expanding your reach as your network grows. It’s something that only really clicks when you see it happening—and that’s exactly what’s happening here in Wigan.
We’re no longer working as individuals—we’re a team. A team supported by incredible partners, businesses, and supporters across the local community.
