Get Out. Get Involved. Find Your Thing
There’s something really valuable about having somewhere to go.
For young people, having a place where they feel welcome, can meet friends, try new things and just be themselves can make a huge difference.
Working with young people every day, I see it happen all the time. Someone arrives not knowing anybody, feeling a bit unsure, or just looking for something to do. Before long they’re chatting to other young people, joining an activity, discovering a new interest or finding a group where they feel they fit in.
Sometimes all it takes is walking through the door. And that’s what youth work is really about.
Helping young people connect
Life today offers endless ways to stay entertained at home. Phones, gaming, social media and streaming all play a big part in how young people spend their time.
There’s nothing wrong with that, but real-life experiences matter too. Whether it’s trying a new sport, learning a skill, getting creative, meeting new people or simply having a laugh with friends, those moments help young people build confidence and feel part of something bigger than themselves.
The challenge is that sometimes taking that first step can feel difficult. That’s why I’m delighted that Wigan Youth Zone is free to access for members this summer, with free meals available too.
And there’s another bit of good news that could make getting here even easier.
Getting to us could be free too
Throughout August 2026, children aged 5 to 15 can travel for free on Bee Network bus services as part of the Government’s Great British Summer Saving scheme. There’s no need to register or sign up, and eligible young people can enjoy unlimited free travel throughout August.
For many families, removing travel costs can make a real difference, and it means one less barrier to getting out and taking part.
So if you’ve been thinking about coming along to Wigan Youth Zone, now is a great time to give it a try.
Whether you’re looking to get active, meet new people, spend time with friends or simply have somewhere positive to go during the holidays, we’d love to welcome you.
The best part is that you don’t need to have everything figured out before you arrive.
You can just turn up and see what interests you.
You never know what you'll enjoy until you try it
One of the most rewarding parts of youth work is seeing young people discover talents and interests they never knew they had.
It might be sport.
Music. Dance. Art and creative activities. Gaming. Cooking.
Or simply finding a group of people they enjoy spending time with.
Not everything you try will be for you, and that’s completely fine. In fact, that’s part of growing up. Trying different things helps young people learn more about themselves and build confidence along the way.
Nobody should feel pressure to get it right first time.
A simple challenge this summer
I think it’s important that young people have places where they can connect face to face, build friendships and feel that they belong.
Not because being online is a bad thing. It isn’t. But young people need both.
They need spaces where they can be themselves, try new experiences, have fun, make mistakes, learn from them and discover what they enjoy. At Wigan Youth Zone, that’s exactly what we’re here to provide.
So if you’re a young person reading this, here’s my challenge to you:
- Get out of the house.
- Try something new.
- Start a conversation.
- Give an activity a go.
- See what happens.
- You might just find your thing.
And if you’re a parent or carer, encourage them to take that first step. Because you never know where one visit, one activity or one new friendship might lead.
With free entry, free meals and free bus travel for eligible young people throughout August, there’s never been a better time to get involved.
We’ll see you at Wigan Youth Zone.
