When I first came to Wigan Youth Zone, I was very shy, and when I moved to
Wigan, I didn’t know where to start. I went through a lot, too much for a
teenage girl. Wigan Youth Zone has given me a sense of security. It is such a
unique place; no one can compare to the staff here and the opportunities
they provide. Everyone knew me, and I felt like I could walk into every room
and feel so comfortable. I have been through depression, anxiety, eating
problems, self-harm, and sometimes I have not wanted to be here. These
feelings are scary to face on your own as an adult, never mind a young
person.
In my wellbeing sessions, Rachel created a space where I could be honest
and always gave me the best advice. She has been a shoulder to cry on and
someone I could go to if I just wanted to sit in silence. She allowed me to open
up and access the help I needed. She has turned my life around completely,
without a doubt. She has brought me out of my shell and given me life skills
that will help me forever. She was there for me when my Gran passed away
and taught me that I don’t have to suffer in silence anymore. She is my
biggest role model, and because of her, I can thrive and be independent.
Wigan Youth Zone has been such a big part of my life, and I am so grateful
for everything you have all done for me.
Steph came to Wigan Youth Zone in 2024 facing grief, anxiety, learning
difficulties, and isolation. With little confidence or support, she struggled
to cope and experienced further loss. Through long-term support,
including one-to-one wellbeing sessions, she built trust, developed
healthier coping strategies, and regained confidence. She went on to form
friendships, develop life skills, and maintain employment for five years.
Now approaching adulthood, Steph is more confident, independent, and
better able to manage her mental health.
Steph reflects on her journey:
Steph’s journey shows how consistent, trusted support can help a young
person move from crisis and isolation to confidence, resilience, and
independence.
