Introduction

ABOUT ‘ROUND WIGAN’

Heritage Lottery Funded Project

Young people from Wigan Youth Zone are in the midst of ‘Round Wigan‘ an exciting intergenerational community project researching, interpreting and bringing to life the evolution of Wigan’s, dance and fashion scene from the 1950’s to the late 1980’s.

Wigan Youth Zone has been granted Heritage Lottery Funding for the 12 month project. Our project idea has been developed against 3 main themes Dance, Music and fashion. In addition they have identified secondary social history themes that we feel will emerge as a result of our project. For example social history (relationships, travel, leisure time, racism, culture clashes, economics, class, identity).

Research and Explore

We are currently researching and exploring the 3 main themes by using oral history interviews, local archives, local community groups and venues, heritage partner’s expertise and the local press/radio.
