Premier League recognises local youth facility for its impact on young people.
Wigan Youth Zone has been recognised for its efforts in helping thousands of youngsters achieve their potential after receiving the Premier League Charitable Fund’s Transformational Journey Facilitator award.
As part of the Charitable Fund’s ten year anniversary awards this week (23rd-27th November), local individuals and organisations are being recognised for their efforts in providing a positive impact in their local communities through Premier League funded projects.
The Youth Zone has been a keen partner in funded projects delivered by Wigan Athletic Community Trust since it opened in 2013 after benefiting from a £350,000 grant from the Premier League and FA Facilities to build three 3G pitches at the centre.
Anthony Ashworth-Steen, Executive Director at Wigan Youth Zone said:
“We’re absolutely delighted to get an award for something that feels so natural to us and has been since day one.
“The relationship with Wigan Athletic Community Trust has been incredible from day one when we got Premier League funding for the pitches, right through to the projects we run in collaboration whether its Kicks, mentoring or inclusion sports. It’s delightful to have that relationship and its working so well.
“Young people in the country, especially during these current times need support more than ever so to have two organisations that are focused on making the lives of young people as good as possible makes for a fantastic collaboration along with the other partners we work with across the borough.
“We’re delighted that between us we have been impacting thousands and thousands of young people and we hope to do more in the future.”
The centre provides a flagship site to host competitions with other clubs, while at least three Kicks sessions take place there a week for young people to take part in free football and sport activities.
Thanks to a grant from the Premier League and PFA Community Fund in 2013, the Community Trust have also employed a Football Officer to work at the centre to lead and deliver football activities for young people.
Wigan Athletic’s Head of Community, Tom Flower, who presented the award said:
“A huge congratulations to Wigan Youth Zone for receiving the Transformational Journey award. They have been a key partner for us in offering a number a Premier League funded projects over the past number of years which has enabled is to make Wigan Athletic part of the everyday life of young people who take part in activities there. Through a number of programmes including Kicks, we have been able to help 1000s of young people achieve their potential and to create safer, stronger communities.”
