Kirsty, Get A Job Student (WYZ’s employability Course)

kirst1kirst1

Kirsty enrolled in the Youth Zone’s 18th Cohort of our Get a Job Course, after struggling to find work after leaving college early. Kirsty gained a wealth of skills, knowledge and experiences as part of her time on the course – as well as making some close friendships.

I am 19 years old and left college during the Christmas holidays because I realised I wanted to do something more practical and without the pressure of exams and stress. Since leaving college I have been actively looking for work and had no luck. I was advised to attend the opening day of the Employability Course held at The Wigan Youth Zone. After the introduction I was willing to give it a go as the course is based around the skills necessary to find work.

The course:

We started the course with team building activities which at first I thought was quite cheesy and typical etc. but I was surprised to find we got to know each other a lot more and learnt each other’s names. Throughout the course I have had the opportunity to bond with new people and work on various projects such as “Tether” which is the app we created to find friends in busy environments. Learning the skills necessary to be more employable was made more engaging than I originally thought, for example, knowing what to wear for an interview. We did a lesson on preparing for an interview where some of us dressed in clothes that were appropriate and the rest of us dressed in clothes that weren’t appropriate. This lesson turned out to be hilarious! I feel like one of the most useful things I learnt was what to say in an interview as this is one of the main problems where I go wrong when it comes to getting work. This gave me ideas of what to say and how to plan out what to ask. I think this will make me less kirsty_amazonnervous in an interview situation.

As a group we have built a close relationship with each other. This can be seen in the video for our project ‘Tether’. We had a great time filming this in the sun. I feel as though I was a confident member at the beginning of the course but I feel like this course has helped me develop other skills as well. I can also see how much this course has had a positive impact on others confidence which I didn’t expect. As part of our enterprise project we had to do presentations on app ideas in front of the rest of the class, this made me quite nervous but I felt like I had achieved something big when I’d done it. I was able get my point across which I felt good about.

The residential:

The residential was the thing I was dreading the most and I’m probably one of the first to admit that openly. I hate staying away from home and knowing that we were going to be doing outdoor activities involving heights made me terrified beyond belief. But after facing my fear and doing abseiling I got a lot of personal satisfaction knowing I did it. I enjoyed a lot of the activities at night as well eg. Pictionary, Jenga and my favourite the pub quiz. I have had a great time and glad I had the opportunity. There was never a dull moment.

Future aspirations:

My plan is to get an interview at Holiday Inn and try and get a job there. I am also going to be looking at apprenticeships after various talks with people on the course. I feel like this may be an alternative to carry on my studies with more of a ‘hands on’ approach. After the presentation by an entrepreneur (Simon Hall) I realised I should do something that I enjoy rather than what is the more academic route.  I am interested in digital or creative design apprenticeships.

Overall, the course wasn’t how I originally thought, I thought it would be a bit boring and a bit too cheesy, however, I have made a lot of strong connections with people and I hopefully will continue to be in touch with them in the near future. I would definitely take part in this experience again and would advise anyone else who is in a similar position to me to look into it. All the staff are amazing, so encouraging and helpful, they need more credit. It was definitely a positive experience.

I have had a great time and glad I had the opportunity. There was never a dull moment..”
