Daniel Peet is a regular on the skate park at the Wigan Youth Zone. He is a new member, never went to junior sessions and only started in September 2015 as a senior. He used to use public Skate parks but felt intimidated by the older riders that also used it and he never tried new tricks in case he hurt himself so he could never progress. When he heard about the Wigan Youth Zones skate park, he signed up straight away.

“I wanted to go somewhere that I felt safe, I want to get better at riding, so because I have to try new tricks it was better to be somewhere there was a member of staff watching in case I fall off, and my mum feels more confident too, knowing there is someone watching over me.”

Daniel has now made a lot of new friends on the skate park, and his confidence has built so much that he now comes in on his own, when before he used to come in with a friend for support. He has become friends with an older member that has been with us since the beginning and he teaches Daniel new tricks. Daniel said he is his inspiration. Even though there is such a big age gap between them, they share the same passion in riding.

“That is what is so amazing about the skate park here, it doesn’t matter where you are from or what other interests you have, you will always have riding in common.”

Daniel’s confidence has grown so much that now he wants to join in on the tournaments we are going to hold here at The Wigan Youth Zone in 2016. This is something he never would have done when he joined with us in September; it is great to see that in only 2 months he has become a lot more confident in himself, even showing new member’s tricks and helping staff fix our bikes.

His biggest achievements so far are becoming a pro at bunny hopping, using the pyramid and going down the half pipe. His dream job is to be a pro BMX rider and he feels that coming to the youth zone every day to use our skate park will help him.
